09 Apr 2008 – borrowed from Jen to read for the BookiesToo online book group

Oh dear. I feel bad about this, having snagged it off wyldetwo, but I found I really could not *bear* this book and gave up around p.30!!

I found it was quite manipulative, trying to pull the reader in to guess what had happened.

I also found the gloomy – so gloomy! – narrator just put me in mind of Mary Webb’s “Precious Bane” and it’s great pee-taker, “Cold Comfort Farm”. You know – Something Nasty In The Woodshed. And when that got into my mind, I couldn’t shake it, and I couldn’t see the beauty in the words that others have seen, for thinking of that.

I didn’t have a problem with the dialect – being somewhat familiar with the Valleys myself, it really conjured up the speech patterns.

Sorry!

Off to the next reader tomorrow. At least it’s got some houses on it so will do for the Never Judge competition!!!
