This was meant for Ali, but she’d just read a copy so she passed it to me.

What a wonderful book! A proper, old-fashioned nice big story, set in a village near Birmingham in the 1920s.  Old money (or lack of it) in the form of the new heir to the Manor, comes up against New Money, in the form of a reforming Birmingham capitalist, and their battle is played out against a beautifully-drawn background of all the social levels in the village and its farms. Like Akenfield come to novelistic life, and reminiscent of Dorothy Whipple’s "The Priory", this is a real and absorbing read and will stay with me for a long time.
