Just a quick post as I’ve discovered that not everybody knows this …
If you want to read a book that’s only published in e-book form for Kindle (like my cholesterol book or my self-employment book – sorry, had to get some plugs in!), did you know that you don’t need to own a physical Kindle to read it?
You can download a free Kindle app that allows you to read Kindle books on other machines like phones, tablets and computers.
Where to find Kindle apps
Amazon offer free downloadable software so that you can read Kindle e-books without a Kindle – on a PC, Mac or various types of phone and tablet.
If you do have a Kindle, your phone, tablet or computer version of the software will automatically sync with it to record where you’ve got up to in a book. Magic!
They have a page about it here. This is not an ad for Amazon, more an attempt to reassure people that they can still read my books!

Although I have a kindle I now read nearly all my e-books on my i-pad mini. It weighs about the same and takes up the same amount of room when I’m out and about. That way I have both a book and a computer with me. And, as long as I’ve downloaded the book before I go out, I don’t have to be in a wi-fi area to read it. I suspect some people don’t realise that.

I suspect I’d do the same if I had a tablet at all. As I don’t, but I do have the phone for internet stuff, it works well.

I look at the various e-readers and think, ooooh they look cool, but I don’t need a bunch of similar devices, so I read all my ebooks on my iPad. Using the various proprietary apps, or I just convert from one format to another using Calibre.

I don’t have a tablet, so I find the Kindle is fine, I just treat it like another kind of book. But I like having the Kindle app on my smartphone so I can read books if I’ve not wanted to take the Kindle with me.

I have to admit, I love using the kindle on my mac..it means I can see things nice and big in colour, and making comments/highlights for studying is excellent! ๐

How interesting – I’ve never looked at an e-book on my PC!

Much like me and my phone. I have it on my PC, too, but just to check the formatting on my own books!

I was bought a Kindle – but then downloaded a sci-fi magazime monthly and never saw it again! I read on my Samsung Galaxy Smartphone and Occasionally my Nexus 10 tablet – my eyesight is not so good at the moment so I like being able to make text sizes bigger.

Good story! You can make the text size larger on a standard Kindle and turn the screen around to get more words per line, by the way.

Thanks for this post! It’s come in handy today when people have told me they don’t have a Kindle. And given other people’s comments, I might try using the other apps in addition to my Kindle. I gave up using the app on iPad when I got the Kindle (my iPad is first generation and quite heavy) but will experiment with iPhone and Macbook to see if I get on with it

Glad to be of help! I don’t mind it at all on my phone although it’s tricky to read poetry as the lines come out oddly!

Just wondering if it’s worth including the word “app” in the post? I wanted to find this to link to it this morning and searched both blogs for “kindle app” but couldn’t find it. (I got here eventually by going back on my Facebook timeline to find the link) ๐
