First of all, I don’t think enough teen or early 20s female-identifying people and their people have seen my fantastic competition to win a copy of the AMAZING “Girl Up” so click away here and simply leave a comment on that post to enter, and I’ll leave the competition open until Monday.
And there’s ANOTHER book to win at the end. But first some book haul. We all like book haul, don’t we … and there’s a story here.
So, there’s been a lot of talk about the new editions of the Associated Press Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style coming out this year (both allowing “singular they” for the first time, which I’m finding very exciting (here’s an article about singular they from my work blog if you’re interested). I was worried about missing them so have placed pre-orders – I wish there was a service that alerted you to new editions of books that are updates fairly regularly, and if there is one, please let me know! Then, I was skimming through Facebook and I discovered to my horror that I might have pre-orders placed for those two editing tools, but I’d managed to miss the 12th edition of the Concise Oxford Dictionary coming out. So I ordered that.
The eagle-eyed among you might have spotted that the three books that arrived today do not look like the Concise Oxford Dictionary. Well … these two pony books are the last in Jane Smiley’s little series, and they were in the shopping cart because the titles are confusing (one set of titles in the UK, one in the US) and I wanted to remember which ones I needed. So …
And THEN I spotted an alert on Facebook to a review by an e-edibuddy (or editor chum only known via social media) of a book about dictionaries, Kory Stamper’s “Word by Word”. Kory and I had a slightly excited conversation about having worked on dictionaries, and when it arrived and I flicked through the beginning – oh, the excitement, I find that Ms Stamper has studied the Icelandic Sagas! Yes, I am promoting this book up the TBR!
Talking TBR, I finally got round to starting Lorna Landvik’s “Once in a Blue Moon Lodge” which I got from NetGalley and got all freaked out by the long wait until when I was able to publish a review. Then I realised it’s a sequel to her “Patty Jane’s House of Curl” which, the date in my paperback copy tells me, I read 20 years ago. So that’s off the shelf and on the bedside table now. Sigh. Because yes, I don’t remember what happened in that book, read probably 2,500 books ago.
Competition time again!
Remember when I read this NetGalley review e-book? Well, today a print copy arrived, presumably a thank you for either reviewing it or taking part in the publisher’s blog tour. Which is nice, but also a little, well, ironic. So I’m offering this up to you all to WIN this pristine, mint-condition paperback. Comment below if you’d like to be in with a chance.
I have just finished a book but that review will wait till Sunday. I hope you enjoyed hearing about what came into the house (or off the shelves where it’s been for 20 years) today!

I had to chuckle at you slipping those horsey books into the shopping basket just so you didn’t forget which ones you needed… I am buying terrifyingly little at the moment – a Clive James poetry book at the Oxfam today is the first in ages. It can’t last…

Yes, I have no idea how that happened, really, obviously! And well done, you. I didn’t think I’d seen any “haul” posts recently.

Clutter must die. Not entering to win, can’t imagine shipping worth it from UK but just putting this on my wish list, thanks for flagging as I’d missed that review.

I like books about dictionaries and etymology too. I’m definitely interested in Stamper’s.
I haven’t read any of Smiley’s horsey books, whether these for kids or Horse Heaven — do you recommend that one? (Interestingly, two horse books were on the Baileys Prize longlist this year, and one remains on the shortlist, The Sport of Kings.)
I’d love to win Year of No Clutter.

I really thought I’d get a chance to start the dictionary book this weekend but I had tea at a mosque, did some work, had a walk in the sunshine and took photos at a race, walked back home, had coffee with a friend, helped my husband fix a new outside tap and then went to a gig!
The horsey books are good – people were put off by the talking horse in Horse Heaven but I didn’t mind. The kids’ series is really well done.
And I’ll put you in the hat for the year of no clutter … you’re alone there at the moment …

What a fun weekend! It’s good that you took advantage of the weather; it seems to be turning colder this week.

I missed your deadline but never mind. I’ve been doing my own form of decluttering where at least one thing has to leave the house every day. I’ve found that tackling it in small doses is easier than having grand clear outs

Well the hat only had one name in it and I hadn’t got round to closing the competition so I’ll put your name in, too! I’m trying to get rid of something every week which is going quite well.

Thats astonishing given the fuss over the Kondo book – I would have expected applications in droves

To be honest, I don’t think people like competitions on this blog! When I originally reviewed this and included links from the publisher, it had very very low views.

Its odd isn’t it how some reviews just seem to wither on the vine
