The first book read this year, and indeed this was the photo I sent into the first book of the year blog. I chose this reread as my first book because Iris Murdoch, whose 26 novels I’ve just finished rereading, is a character in the book!
Paul Magrs – “Aisles”
(26 September 2019)
We’re introduced to an Internet chatroom in Norwich, where middle aged lecturers can pose as cheeky monkeys, and Robin spends much time in the spare room doing just that, and the women who surround him could be just anybody, too, including people he might know through six degrees of separation – and suddenly someone calling herself Iris Murdoch is dialling in from a boat on the North Sea full of other dead writers…
The focus pulls out: there’s a car crash (a bit detailed but not too much) which involves most of the characters in one way or another, from a young straight man smitten (sometimes) with his gay best friend to a 77 year old mature student with two secrets. Parents and children, lovers and flirters, the spotlight shines on each, but in a natural way, not like a writing exercise (I’m thinking of other books that do this kind of thing that I haven’t liked so much: it’s more like “The Lido” than “If Nobody Speaks of Remarkbable Things”, and that’s a Good Thing in my book!
Warm and wry, celebrating ordinary and different people with a dash of magical realism … and who’s that on the tills at the end …?
New books in!
These books have arrived for me to read later in the year. I will admit to being a tiny bit nervous about these, as I’m not a big reader of other-planetary sci fi, however I’m going to trust Paul and give the “Mars Trilogy” (“Lost on Mars”, “The Martian Girl” and “The Heart of Mars”) a good go.
Giveaway time!
Paul Magrs’ “Exchange” is a lovely novel, which I first read a good while ago. It’s the story of a boy and a bookshop and about growing up, and, most excitingly, has a mention of Bookcrossing, a hobby I still engage in today. That fact compelled me to write only my third ever fan letter to an author!
To win this second hand but pretty pristine copy of “Exchange”, comment below saying you’d like to go in the draw, and have a go at guessing who my other fan letters were to (your answer won’t affect the draw, but might be fun!).
Are you joining me in the Magrsathon? Some of the books are sadly out of print but second hand copies can be got hold of and the Mars trilogy in particular is available new.

Aisles sounds like fun! I’d be happy to win a copy of Exchange, though if I don’t I can get it from my library (shelved under “Teen Fiction — STORAGE: reserve or ask staff”). I reckon your other fan letters were to Iris Murdoch and Anne Tyler.

Brilliant, you’re in the draw, and I’m glad it’s still in libraries even a little buried! Regarding your guess, partly right …

Not entering the giveaway, because I simply must not acquire any more books for ages! I just wanted to say how much I love that photo.

I love the photo too though I’ll probably keep out of the giveaway (however tempting) because like Ali I am drowing in books… ;D

… probably? It’s a quick read! And thank you, it was funny to line it up, and there were many out-takes!

I have a copy of Exchange, so don’t put me in the draw. I’ve found Magrs a little hit & miss. Loved the Brenda & Effie books, but found To the Devil – a Diva! a bit too OTT. I ought to try him again though.

Yes, To the Devil … is his book I cannot read as too eeeeeek for me. Exchange is great, though – why don’t you join me with that – I think I’ll be reading it in August. Or you could read it before and I’ll save your review to link.

Sorry, no giveaway for me either, you’d go broke posting a book to Australia. I look forward though to you Magrs reviews. A bit worrying, apparently mainstream SF by an academic who’s mostly written other stuff (not sure Dr Who counts as mainstream SF) including magic realism. Is he just playing? On the other hand Ian Banks one of my all time favourites wrote SF and good general fiction at the same time.

I’d be happy to send it to Australia, it’s only a few pounds here and there! (Of course I’d send it surface mail so it’d have to row itself across the ocean …).
Right, so he’s not an academic – he used to teach creative writing (and still helps people on that journey through books and workshops) at a university, and his other novels are by far not academic. A problem he’s had through his career is that he’s not in a genre (where would you put a series of novels about the Bride of Frankenstein’s Monster running a B&B in Whitby and solving crimes with her equally elderly mate?) so it’s hard to define or pin him down. The Phoenix Court books I’m about to review are stories set on North-East housing estates with flashes of magical realism – we’re not talking the heavily literary form of South American writers but weird rips in reality.
I’m not a sci fi expert but Doctor Who is full of beings dwelling on other planets, etc. and I see the Mars books as an extension of that. I am hoping some people familiar with that, yes, genre, read along with me to give me that perspective, though. And I will also ask him the question when I do an interview with him soon!

I watched Dr Who along with all the rest of the human race, but I’ve never read the books. I tend to regard Dr Who as a satire on SF. Maybe I’m wrong. If I can find a Magrs Mars book I’d be happy to read along with you. And if it’s ok with you, I’m happy to be in the draw.
