Week 1 (10/30-11/3) Your Year in Nonfiction: Celebrate your year of nonfiction. What books have you read? What were your favorites? Have you had a favorite topic? Is there a topic you want to read about more? What are you hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November? (Heather at Based on a True Story)
I’ve had a good year in nonfiction since last November. In 2023 I’ve read 61 nonfiction books out of 141 (43%) and you can add another 5 from December. I’ve read, as usual, quite a lot of memoir, history, nature and social justice books, and that’s what I want to continue reading. I rated the following reads highly:
- Chelsea Watego – Another Day in the Colony
- Alexis Keir – Windward Family
- Amrit Wilson – Finding a Voice
- Mary Keating et. al – Birmingham: The Brutiful Years
- Kit de Waal – Without Warning and Only Sometimes
- Adam Nathaniel Furman et al. – Queer Spaces
- Charles Montgomery – The Happy City
- Richard Mabey – The Unofficial Countryside
- Angela Hui – Takeaway
- Lenny Henry et al. – Black British Lives Matter
- Hunter Davies – The Heath
What am I hoping to get out of participating in Nonfiction November? Well, first of all, the joy of helping to save it for everyone (four out of the five of us doing our weeks are new to hosting this particular challenge and I’m so grateful we were able to pull it together). I usually make some good new blog connections through this month and learn about some very cool books I want to read (if you’re doing Nonfiction November this year: top tip is to record the books you add to your wish list with the link of where you found them in a draft post from the beginning of the month …)

Thanks for rescuing this one, Liz. I read far more fiction than non-fiction but have found Nonfiction November very handy in pointing me at titles I wouldn’t have otherwise discovered.

Brilliant, that’s what it’s all about. And even for big non-fiction readers, we always find more to read!

I’m very excited to see this post Liz – bravo to you and the other four for keeping this blogging event going.
Now to finish my post which will also include the Chelsea Watego book (Bill will be pleased 🙂 )

Bill will be. Another Day in the Colony is one of the most important Australian books of the last few years.
I’ve been reading on the foundation of the colony, as it happens. ‘Tom’ Keneally’s The Commonwealth of Thieves. It’s ok but feels more old fashioned than I expected of Keneally. No review though, sorry.

Glad we’re all getting to read it! Also the Claire Coleman I just read (review coming today amidst the sudden glut of work / Invoicing Day) is so important and vital and will I think make it onto my top 10 for this year.

That’s a good tip! I invariably add so many books to my TBR. The Black Count was one I read this year based on NN recs but I can’t remember whose.

Yes, my first year doing NonFicNov I kept a note of the books but not where I found them! I’m creating my post today before I read anyone’s Week 1 posts and then I can add as I go!

I was quite pleased, that was out of about 155 for the calendar year, I think, as I read a lot of fiction in December last year!

It’s been up as high as 50%, it’s running at 57/43 to fiction this year but tipped more to fiction if you include last December as I read a lot of Dean Street Press books that month!

As Brona said: “…bravo to you and the other four for keeping this blogging event going.” So glad you helped to keep this challenge aflot. Your highly reccomended books are all new titles for me. I’ll have to look into them. Queston: Do you have link to a list of ALL your 61 non-ficiton read in 2023? I would be curious to have a look at it. Great list, and thanks for helping NF lovers keep this challenge!

Thank you! And no, I’m afraid I don’t – I should maybe tag by fiction/nonfiction, might start doing that from November but no idea when I’d get to go back and do the whole archive!

Last year I read 16 nonfiction books–including 6 for non-fiction November. I won’t be participating in NF November this year because I didn’t plan ahead properly. I have too many fiction books in my library inbox to read. But I’m excited to follow along!

Not a problem of course, you can always contribute to the weekly themes by commenting on the posts as you can talk about any nonfiction you’ve read!
